Tomb Raider, the sequel with Alicia Vikander in crisis: MGM loses the rights and the auction opens for them

MGM loses the rights to the sequel to Tomb Raider 2, in theory, the sequel to the first (passed on the sly) with Alicia Vikander, Oscar winner and wife of Michael Fassbender. But what happened and what exactly will be the future of this action film based on the famous video game of the same name? Alicia Vikander, who played Lara Croft in the 2018 reboot, is no longer tied to the project, thus definitively giving up playing the adventurous archaeologist and video game heroine. The saga will be fully relaunched and there are no directors or authors announced for the future project.

A few weeks ago, Alicia Vikander herself announced a delay and deadlock in the release of the film due to issues with MGM

However, in 2021, Vikander talked about the new film in slightly different terms, assuming it existed and clearly saying she was a part of it.

When the studio told me they were interested in making a sequel, I was thrilled… When given the name of Misha, I chose to see Lovecraft Country, which left me strongly impressed. During the meetings on Zoom that I had with Misha, we immediately found each other well, it is nice to finally be able to confront a woman of my age.

The Tomb Raider sequel was first announced in 2019 and, according to forecasts made at the time, was due to go into production in the first quarter of 2020. The advent of the global pandemic, which has completely blocked the film industry, has forced production to temporarily abandon the project. However, after an initial recovery, it seems that the stalemate has become a full stop and that we are ready to look elsewhere, with new production and new staff on the horizon.
