Legendary Hollywood actor Robert De Niro wrote a moving letter to director Paolo Sorrentino to praise It Was God’s Hand

The film, in contention for the Oscar, reached international audiences like all Sorrentino’s productions. It was the hand of God, one of the Neapolitan artist’s most personal masterpieces, which did not win the Golden Globe but received global acclaim, once again launching Italian cinema at the center of contemporary culture. Some Hollywood stars liked the film so much that it resulted in a real correspondence with Sorrentino himself.

We are talking, for example, of the letter received by the Neapolitan director from one of the greatest living actors: the great Robert De Niro. De Niro was absolutely dazzled by It Was the Hand of God and couldn’t stop himself from complimenting his creator personally. The letter, however, thanks to Deadline magazine, has become a real review, a public endorsement among artists. Here is what Robert De Niro wrote about It was the hand of God:

“” I have only been to Naples a few times – writes Robert De Niro – but for me, this film is decidedly Neapolitan in the way that many of Martin Scorsese’s (Wolf of Wall Street, Bringing Out the Dead, Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, etc.) like many other Woody Allen films (Annie Hall, Broadway Danny Rose, Manhattan, etc.) seem to capture the essence of New York City. Naples reminds me in many ways of the Italian-American New York that I love ”.

De Niro continued, writing:

“Despite the tragedy that is at the heart of the film, ‘It was God’s hand’ is full of fun. Scenes such as the extended family’s outdoor lunch and the subsequent boat trip are incredibly fascinating and fun. And if the central story sees Fabietto torn from his precarious youth and dragged into adulthood too quickly, the stories one encounters along the way are priceless. For example, there is Armà, the cigarette smuggler / violent hooligan / sympathetic friend and finally imprisoned. A bizarre character, yes, but in my opinion absolutely credible due to my experiences in New York as a child. And there is Capuano “.
